  48. Signfont is a method of writing American Sign Language the way it
  49. is signed!  No more do you have to write to your Deaf friends in English
  50. when you use ASL with them when you meet.  No more do you have to try to
  51. translate great Deaf stories or jokes into English, only to lose a lot
  52. in translation.  ASL can be written as ASL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  54.     The keymap, sfnt1, works like any other Amiga Keymap.  Just use a
  55. setmap command. WARNING: if you want to experiment, first click open the
  56. System drawer, then single click the SETMAP icon, and in TOOLTYPES
  57. type KEYMAP=usa1 and hit the return, then save it.  This way, you can go back
  58. to the standard keymap with the mouse, and then use the Amiga's CLI as if
  59. nothing happened.  This is VERY important, as I shall explain below.

  61.     The font, SignFont/9, is a proportionally spaced, 9 point font.
  62. That means it is just slightly larger that the default system font, TOPAZ/8.
  63. HOWEVER: I did some serious work on the keymap and the font, so that I will
  64. later be able to write a COMPLETE wordprocessor (Don Newkirk, are you reading
  65. this...why have you never sent that info I asked for...I'll even pay the
  66. postage) which will include, get this, a SPELLCHECKER to make sure we are
  67. writing our signs correctally according to the rules of SignFont (pg. 45
  68. in the ARCHITECT: FINAL VERSION book.  I don't know where it is in any other
  69. books) and so we can use the operating system files to SORT things 
  70. in SIGNFONT alphabetical order (Thanks again to the gang who put that
  71. stuff in the book).  The Keymap DOES NOT send out the ASCII codes that
  72. correspond to the original key covers.  This would never work, as I would
  73. have to write a monster of a hashing programme to alphabetize SIGNFONT later.

  75.     Also in the works is a complete TERMINAL programme that will allow
  76. you to use either ASCII/English or SIGNFONT (how does 2400 baud sound to
  77. all of you using TDDs at 110 baud and have computers), and even an
  78. RTTY and Packet programme using Signfont for all you Deaf Ham radio types.

  80.     Of course, all the menus, error messages, etc. will be in SIGNFONT and
  81. ASL for all of these programmes, so please let me know what you would like
  82. to see out there for the AMIGA.  We have one of the most adaptable computers
  83. out there, and it is time we put it to work for the Deaf Community.

  89.     REGISTRATION:  Anyone who wishes to be kept up to date on future
  90. improvements (like fixing the keymap so it will send the correct control
  91. codes to get out of programmes, and the WordProcessor) and other
  92. Styrofoam Iguana software products MUST register with me.  I am placing
  93. this stuff out on the Public Domain circut, but the really good versions
  94. of the Word Processor and other programmes only go to those who ask.  I
  95. would like to be able to give all of this out for free, but I am a college
  96. student who needs money for things like disks to send out updates to
  97. registered users, and to try to pay my phone bill for up and down loading
  98. all the stuff i have been using to get this done.

  101. picky) or US stamps.  Anything more, like samples of your poetry or
  102. som of your favorite stories and jokes IN SIGNFONT would also be appreciated,

  116. the keymap and font.  I cannot include a primer on Signfont in this
  117. release, but if you write to either of the first two addresses, I know that
